I scream, You scream, we all scream for SELF CARE! Yep. You heard me right folks. I’m talking about pure, unadulterated self love in the form of simple daily practices that have the power to make any day a great day.
Often times our lives become so busy that we fail to take moments throughout each day to make sure our own needs are being met. When this happens, negativity sets in and over time it can build stress that ends up leaving you feeling exhausted, frustrated and unappreciated. Nobody likes to feel that way. The good news is, you have the power to control your perspective. Here are a few self care habits you can incorporate into your routine to bring more joy into your life.
Gratitude is one of the simplest ways to incorporate self care and joy into your life. You can make the choice at any moment of the day to be grateful. You could be grateful for your fuzzy socks or the beautiful weather, the home you live in, or your favorite sweater. It can be anything you choose. Gratitude in small doses adds up over time to create a total shift in perspective. It’s especially useful on days that are challenging. Once you start practicing gratitude, you will see that you truly do have the power to change how you feel, how you think and how you experience the world.
Meditation is one of my favorite practices. It allows you to slow down, feel the breath in your lungs and take control of your mind. It decreases stress and takes the urgency off of daily pressures. It’s a wonderful way to shift your focus from negatives to positives. It can even give you a new perspective. Choose an intention, quiet your mind, and find your peace. You can do this for a few minutes a day or even longer if you prefer.
Stretching daily increases your flexibility, energizes your mind and relieves stress. Starting your day with a few stretches and ending it the same way is a great practice and only takes a few minutes. Choose your favorites and stretch it out!
If you spend most of your time being inactive, you’re likely to have very little motivation to get up and be active. Taking quick walks around your neighborhood or your office can give you a solid burst of energy and a fresh point of view. You can do jumping jacks, squats, or even jog in place. There are so many ways to get your body moving and you’ll be proud of yourself for taking a moment to give your body what it needs.
Human beings are not machines as much as we would like to think we can be. Your brain needs to rest from time to time in order to perform at its highest capacity. If you’re in the middle of something and you hit a mental wall, that’s a good sign that you should step away from whatever you’re doing and focus on something else. This would be a great time to move your body. Take a walk, stretch it out, have a dance off with yourself. Whatever suits you. Just make sure you’re giving your mind a chance to reset by taking breaks throughout your day. You’ll be happier for it.
Hydration is so important. Most people don’t drink enough water and their bodies pay dearly for it. Dehydration causes irritability, fatigue, headaches, loss of appetite and general discomfort. This issue can easily be remedied by keeping water with you. There are many water bottle options on the market that make staying hydrated a simple thing. Just choose which is best for you and make a habit of carrying it along when you leave home.
The first thing to remember when implementing a new self care routine is to be patient with yourself. New practices take time and breaking old habits can prove to be difficult. If you prefer, You can pick one thing to add to your life at a time rather than trying to make a big change all at once. Next, stay consistent. The only way to create real change in your life is to commit to the change you desire and do something each day that moves you closer to your goal. Finally, focus on the excitement of implementing new self care habits into your life. When you choose to love yourself well, you’ll be better at everything else you do.
